“Why Your Cookies Spread Too Much — And the Clean-up Trick That Saves Time and Stress”
Share
Have you ever pulled a tray out of the oven expecting perfectly round cookies and instead found one giant cookie slab spread across the sheet? I’ve been there. I once hosted a small get-together and proudly placed cookie dough balls on a baking tray — only to watch them melt into each other like a puddle.
The problem wasn’t the recipe. It was room-temperature dough and a warm baking tray from the previous batch. Dough needs to be cold so the butter doesn’t melt too quickly, and the tray must also be completely cool.
Here’s what actually works:
-
Chill the dough for at least 1–2 hours
-
Freeze shaped cookie balls for 10 minutes before baking
-
Run the tray under cold water (and dry completely) between batches
-
Use silicone baking mats to prevent spreading and sticking
And what about the after-mess? Cleaning melted sugar off the counter used to take forever. The trick that changed everything for me is simply sprinkling baking soda over sticky surfaces and wiping with a warm vinegar solution — it breaks down sugar instantly.
Once you learn these habits, baking becomes enjoyable again instead of stressful.
